Fashion Friday with Birmingham Fashion Blogger Alexis Barton

Presented by and Birmingham Magazine at Birmingham Public Library - Central Branch

December 7, 2012

You've received your first party invitation of the social season and you have no idea what to wear. Does that black necklace go with that new sequined dress? Are boots cool for a cocktail event? Exactly what does the host mean when she says the attire is "creative black tie''? Birmingham fashion blogger Alexis Barton of www.samechicdifferentday.com wants to put your mind at ease. She will give style tips as part of "Fashion Friday,'' which will be held on the fourth floor of the Linn-Henley Research Library, 2100 Park Place.

"I hope this event will calm people's anxiety around dressing for social occasions and help them see that there are a variety of options for putting together their own looks,'' Barton said. "Sequins will be involved.''

Library fashion books and more will also be available to help you achieve your best look for the season.

The program, presented by the Birmingham Public Library and Birmingham magazine, is free.

Welcoming Birmingham Presented by Birmingham Civil Rights Institute at Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

September 16, 2012

September 18, 2012

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct 15)!  BCRI will host "Alabama Appleseed's Welcoming Alabama Dialogue" which is part of a national campaign that brings together members of diverse communities though respectful dialogue.  The goal of these gatherings is to work for lasting and constructive change in the dialogue around immigration by preventing discrimination and unfair treatment of immigrants, and improving the quality of life for immigrants in Alabama.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día...
